Juice yourself to health and healing

In the Heart of Healing, I write about the FASTFOODD diet to healing.

The first "F" stands for FRUITS and the first "D" stand for Detoxifying drinks. Combine fruits and juicing and you have a powerful one-two punch to battle aging and all kinds of diseases. Here's an article (cleverly sent by a group promoting their juicer machine) that talks about the benefits of juicing and some juicing recipes/combinations as well. Benefits of Juicing
The regular consumption of fresh fruit and vegetable juices are one of the very best gifts that you can give to your body.

1. Fresh juices are a tremendous source of enzymes. In fact, the "freshness" of juice is one of their key features, because enzymes are destroyed by heat. When you eat cooked foods, whether its meal, grains, fruits, or vegetables, if the food is cooked at temperatures above 114 degrees, the enzymes have been destroyed by the heat. Since fruits and vegetables are juiced raw, the enzymes are still viable when you drink the juice.

2. In addition, fruit and vegetable juices are good sources of the traditional nutrients. Citrus fruits (grapefruit, oranges, etc.) provide healthy portions of vitamin C.  Carrot juice contains large quantities of vitamin A, in the form of beta carotene. A number of green juices are a good source of vitamin E. Fruit juices are a good source of essential minerals like iron, copper, potassium, sodium, iodine, and magnesium, which are bound by the plant in a form that is most easily assimilated during digestion.

Plus, since juicing removes the indigestible fiber, these nutrients are available to the body in much larger quantities than if the piece of fruit or vegetable was eaten whole. For example, because many of the nutrients are trapped in the fiber, when you eat a raw carrot, you are only able to assimilate about 1% of the available beta carotene. When a carrot is juiced, removing the fiber, nearly 100% of the beta carotene can be assimilated.

3. Fruits and vegetables provide one more substance that is absolutely essential for good health - water. More than 65% of most of the cells in the human body are made of water, and in some tissues, for example the brain, the cells can be made up of as much as 80% water.

Water is absolutely essential for good health, yet most people don't consume enough water each day. Plus, many of the fluids we do drink, coffee, tea, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages and artificially flavored drinks each contain substances that require extra water for your body to eliminate. Fruit and vegetable juices are free of these unneeded substances and are full of pure, clean water.

4. Freshly juiced vegetables (also referred to as fresh green drinks containing ingredients such as cucumber, celery, spinach, lettuce, sprouts, kale, pak choi, broccoli, cabbage, parsley etc.) give your body an instant boost of nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and minerals in a form that the body can easily assimilate, absorb and digest – in fact, studies have shown that the nutrients from juiced fruits and vegetables are within our bloodstream within 30 minutes of consumption.

5. At the most basic level, juicing allows us to add so many more vegetables to our daily diet, and to up the amount of raw food we consume giving the body energy and boosting the immune system and the body's cleansing process.

6. Green juices contain lots of chlorophyll which is incredibly effective in detoxifying our bodies. Chlorophyll can help make our bodies strong, detoxify the liver, can purify and help to rebuild our blood cells (as the molecular structure is very similar to haemoglobin which moves oxygen through our blood), remove mold, parasites and myco/exotoxins from the body and (as many, many studies show) can help prevent and remove cancer cells.

7. According to macrobiotic.co.uk – one of the biggest health benefits of juicing can be summarised in one phrase: cellular cleansing. According to Steve Meyerowitz all changes to a person's health should start at a cellular level by oxygenating and cleansing the system of toxins and other damaging foreign invaders. This is known as creating and enhancing health and fitness from the inside out. The cellular environment is the environment where all of the cells in our body live, including the lymphatic system, digestive system, and cardiovascular system. This could be a whole article in itself, however, it is important to remember that fresh vegetable juices are massively beneficial to the body's efforts to cleanse its cellular environment.

8.  Raw, fresh vegetable juices are extremely alkaline. It is highly beneficial to ensure that your body does not become over-acidic and that an alkaline balance is maintained in the blood & tissues. Over acidification is the common theme and cause of almost all conditions of ill health.

9. As mentioned, raw vegetable juices/ green drinks are an excellent source of vitamins & minerals, trace elements, enzymes and nutrients which supply essential elements required for the body's healing processes and cell regeneration.

10. Vegetable juices are rich in natural medicines, vegetal hormones & antibiotics. For instance, certain hormones needed by the pancreas to produce insulin are present in cucumber & onion juices and freshly juiced garlic, onions, radish & tomatoes contain many beneficial antibiotic substances.

11. Easily absorbed organic minerals such as calcium, potassium & silicon are contained within fresh vegetable juice. These minerals assist the body in restoring the biochemical & mineral balance in the tissues & cells, which helps to prevent the premature aging of cells & disease.

12. Among the most interesting health benefits of juicing, one of these is its potential for alleviating symptoms of depression. The effects of juicing on depression are accomplished by providing a concentrated source of minerals like magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium, and folic acid. Deficiencies of these nutrients are associated with symptoms of depression.

13.  Anti-aging benefits -concentration of antioxidants in juices combats the damaging effects that free radicals have on skin and muscle. Juicing can help keep skin free from wrinkles and muscles well toned. In addition, increasing the intake of antioxidants by juicing can slow the onset of age-related illnesses.
 
Health benefits of Juicing fruits and vegetables
Over the years, health experts have trumpeted the power of juicing. Doctors stress the importance of including at least 5-8 fruits and vegetables daily as part of a healthy diet, and for most people, it's hard to imagine how this many veggies could be consumed in a day. little room for anything else.

Many people make the shift to healthier eating by drinking a fresh juice of carrots, beets, apples, pears, sayote, first thing in the morning. When raw fruits and vegetables are juiced, the body immediately responds by rapidly absorbing the vital enzymes  and micronutrients that are destroyed during the cooking process. Fans of juicing report that drinking fresh juice is often followed by a surge in energy and vitality, and health advocates herald fresh juice's anti-aging properties.

TIPS IN JUICING FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
 
1.      Put the juicer in a place where everyone can see to remind the people in the house to juice fruits and vegetables.

  2.      Wash the fruits and vegetables with fruit and vegetable wash (from SM Supermarket) or Liquid Organic cleaner (LOC) from Amway Philippines to remove any traces of pesticides or other chemicals.

  3.      Do not remove the skin of fruits and vegetables when juicing because 30% of nutrients are found in the skin. For oranges remove the orange skin and retain the white pith as this is rich in bioflavonoids.

  4.      Suggested Fruit and Vegetable combination for 3 glasses of fresh fruit and vegetable juice. You can make your own combination the following are suggested mixes..
a)      2 Apples and 1 pears
b)      2 Apples and 10 carrots
c)      2 Pears, 1 orange and 8 – 10 pcs Carrots
d)      3 Apples and 2 oranges
e)      2 Apples, 1 orange and 6-8 carrots carrots
f)        2 Apples, 10 medium sized carrots and1 pc cucumber
g)      2 apples, 8-10 carrots and a small cut of upo or white squash
h)      2 Apples, 1 pears, 6-8 carrots and 1 pc cucumber or pipino
i)        3 Apples, 1 orange, 1 pc cucumber
 
5.      If apples are expensive I usually add singkamas or turnip to save on the number of apples

6.      Moringa and bitter gourd or ampalaya can also be juiced

7.      Apples, pears or turnip or singkamas.  These three should always be part of fruit and vegetable juices.
